Ice Conditions

April 4th, 2025 Update:

The Tanana River is still currently frozen, but due to recent rain there is approx. 6 inches of standing water covering the majority of the ice.

We will continue to keep you up to date as major changes occur.

April 26th, 2025 Update:

There is no open water at or around the Tripod. However, there is a 15 foot wide channel of flowing water along the south bank of the Tanana river. About a half mile upriver from where the Tripod sits, there is a large open channel with broken ice chunks accumulating, churning and breaking the larger ice sheets apart. The Tanana river ice sheet has become visibly decayed but with no pools as of yet. Half a mile downriver from the Tripod, the Nenana river is flowing freely into the Tanana river. This is a strong indicator that the Tanana river will be breaking up and flowing freely any day now.

April15th, 2025 Update:

The Tanana river which the Tripod sits on, has flowing water along the bank approximately 1 mile upriver from the Tripod.

Where the Tanana and Nenana rivers meet (downriver from the Tripod), the river is still visibly covered in ice, but upriver on the Nenana river, there are some open leads with flowing water. We attempted taking an ice measurement near the Tripod on April 13th, but we found there were many areas the ice depth was lower than 8 inches and determined it was no longer safe to traverse it.
